Right2Know Campaign commemorates Black Wednesday!
On Wednesday 19th October 1977, the apartheid government clamped down on dissent by shutting down three print publications, jailing journalists, and an editor. Activists aligned with the Black Consciousness Movement and 18 organisations involved in anti-apartheid activism were also arrested, detained, and banned. Every year we commemorate this day as a Media Freedom Day or Black Wednesday. This day reminds us of the lengths to which a paranoid, unaccountable, and corrupt government will go to suppress dissent.
In commemoration of the 43rd anniversary of Black Wednesday and the journey to media freedom, the Right2Know Campaign in KZN will host a dialogue on the Community Media sector and COVID-19 crisis to examine the impact of COVID-19 on the state of community media. This will include a pre-Covid status report touching upon challenges and impacts.
In the past few months we have witnessed the closing down of several mainstream media outlets and hundreds of journalists were retrenched due to the COVID-19 crisis. On Monday we will discuss how the Community media sector has been affected by the COVID-19 in terms of funding, programs, etc.
