R2K’s Call to action: Say NO to SANRAL’s tollgate secrecy!

Issued by R2K Western Cape

R2K will picket at the Cape High Court on Monday 4 August, 10am-12pm

The Right2Know Campaign is one of the organisations challenging SANRAL’s attempt to hide information about its proposal to put tolls on the N1 and N2. (Read more here.)

This relates to a legal dispute between SANRAL and the City of Cape Town over the proposed e-tolls. Key information about SANRAL’s plans has been declared ‘confidential’ and the court papers are sealed by court order.

E-tolling will have serious implications for all residents of the Western Cape, especially the poorest of the poor. This matter can’t be dealt with in secret.

We understand that the information SANRAL wants to withhold relates to:
• How much it will cost to convert the N1 and N2 into toll roads;
• The proposed toll fee structure;
• The profits that are expected.

Right2Know, Section 16 and the Open Democracy Advice Centre are applying to be admitted as friends of the court, to challenge the use of secrecy in this matter. The hearing is scheduled for Monday, 4 August 2014.

We will be gathering outside the High Court from 10am to 12pm on Monday, to say NO to SANRAL’s e-tolls secrecy.

Lift the veil of secrecy over tolls! No secret court hearings, no secret court papers!
