Activist Guide to Internet Access as a Right
R2K is proud to launch Expanding the Right to Communicate: an Activist Guide to Internet Access.
For the past two years, the Right2Know Campaign has been building a public campaign for more democratic access to telecommunications. Every person in South Africa has the right to access and impart information and to freedom of expression – rights that are enshrined in the constitution and which form the bedrock of a democratic, transparent and accountable democracy. And yet profiteering and lack of political will among policy-makers and regulators means that these rights are being undermined.
In 2013, our first Activist Guide on the Right to Communicate (available here) focused on cost and access to mobile communication. This new Activist Guide expands this to look at cost and access to internet access.
It explores, among other issues, the right to internet access, the history of the internet in South Africa, the massive inequalities in internet provision, diversity and competition in the ICT sector, and the digital dividend and new technological developments. It is an educational tool for activists and communities seeking to democratise internet access, especially along the following lines.
