Moerane Commission of Inquiry into political killings: Glebelands testimonies to be heard

PRESS NOTICE: THE MOERANE COMMISSION OF INQUIRY INTO POLITICAL KILLINGS IN KWAZULU-NATAL WILL RECONVENE ON MONDAY 17 JULY WHEN TESTIMONIES FROM GLEBELANDS HOSTEL WILL BE HEARD

The R15 million Commission, chaired by advocate Marumo Moerane, was announced by KZN Premier, Willies Mchunu, on 31 October 2016. At the time Mchunu stated 20 political killings were on record as having taken place in KZN.

On 29 May 2017, Police Minister Fikile Mbalula, announced that number had risen to 33 since January 2016.

But as of 13 July 2017, 89 people have died since 13 March 2014 as a result of government’s failure to arrest and convict politically-connected hitmen operating in and from Glebelands hostel. At least 14 of those killed were political leaders, murdered both locally, in and around Durban, and on the KZN south coast. A further 6 murders remain unconfirmed, but are suspected to have been carried out by Glebelands killers.

Despite nearly 3 times the number of people killed at Marikana – the biggest blot on our country’s democracy since 1994 – Glebelands has to date remained a national blindspot.
