JOB ADVERT: Right2Know Gauteng Campaigns Organiser
The Right2Know Campaign is an umbrella group of organisations and activists campaigning to advance the free flow of information in South Africa. The Campaign wants to appoint a second provincial organiser in Gauteng (at R2K’s Johannesburg Office) to support the Provincial Coordinators and the Provincial Working Group to ensure provincial strategic development/planning and to ensure R2K solidarity with local struggles, advocacy & popular education within communities. The successful candidate will coordinate efforts to build alliances and advocate for the right to know.
This is an opportunity to work with committed activists around the country to have a real impact on the challenges facing South Africa at this critical period in our democracy.
Responsibilities will include:

Maintaining knowledge of key environmental trends and developments impacting the R2K in the province

Maintaining knowledge of and help develop stronger relationships with, NGOs, unions, and other stakeholders with thematic expertise that are relevant to R2K
-
Maintaining knowledge of relevant developments and decisions from the National Summit, National Working Group and National Focus Groups that are relevant to the provincial campaigning

Organising and mobilizing NGOs and organisations with thematic expertise to participate in the campaign

Organising content & resource people for popular education events and material with relevant R2K provincial working groups, NGOs and allied movements

Organizing advocacy events (together with the Community Organiser where these require community participation)

Produce and circulate monthly narrative report to the Provincial Working Group and the National Working Group on activities undertaken to build alliances and advocate for the right to know and programme of action for the following month.

Work with Provincial Administrator to maintain campaign records (including finance & contacts)
Requirements:

A relevant tertiary qualification or at least 3 years’ relevant experience;

Legal status to work in South Africa;

Commitment to the democratic principles of the R2K Campaign;

Knowledge and experience in conducting research and writing

Organizing background and experience in advocacy campaigns

Familiarity with legislative and policy processes

Proficiency in report writing and communication
-
Ability to work independently and to collaborate in collective action and campaigns

Experience in developing relations with coalitions and campaigns
-
Excellent written/verbal communication skills with multilingualism being an advantage;

Strong computer skills essential (MS Word, MS Excel, E-mail and Internet);
