Statement – R2K Gauteng to picket outside Westgate Court!
On Thursday 30th November 2017, R2K Gauteng will picket outside the Westgate Court in solidarity with comrade Annie Michaels from 8:30am.
Comrade Annie was illegally evicted and intimidated by a landlord in Peter Ross flats in Joburg. She was later arrested for a month for trespassing.
As our country is marking 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence, R2K wants to once again raise our voice to say that we fully support the right of all South Africans, highlighting women and children to access affordable housing. Over the past weeks we have witnessed with grave concern on how people are being violently evicted in their homes.
In communities like Marievale in Ekurhuleni, women and children are thrown out on the streets in the rain. We are calling on the government to do something about the issue of accessing affordable housing. We cannot afford to act as if it’s business as usual when marginalised communities are being ignored by the elected leaders. We are tired of lip-service, we want delivery especially around providing decent housing for the poor.
We invite the public and the media to join our picket on the 30th November 2017, at the Westgate Court from 8:30AM.
