Free Association! Free Expression! Free Information!
Against the backdrop of deepening inequality, political upheaval, social instability and rising repression, the Right2Know campaign will again mark “Freedom Week” – 27 April (Freedom Day), 1 May (May Day) and 3 May (World Press Freedom Day) – in recognition of the struggles and victories that people across South Africa are waging to defend and make real the equality, justice and freedom promised by democracy. Together we stand to defend the political space we all need to advance our struggles for social, economic, and environmental justice.
This year’s Freedom Week Programme includes 24 events hosted by activists and organisations in the R2K network. Events address various aspects of the right to know and community demands for access to information, from media freedom and secrecy to the right to protest and access to affordable telecommunications. Some highlights include:
- The launch of the Channel Free initiative, SA’s first national social justice TV station;
- A protest against surveillance of our communications at the SSA’s interceptions centre;
- A public meeting to advance the campaign for Access to a Free Internet;
- Four events to oppose repression and in solidarity with the Amadiba community’s struggle to keep mining off their land;
- A picket in solidarity with censored activists in Angola.
- A Freedom Week Summit exploring hate speech, surveillance, and the Right to Recall.
