The Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Town is convinced the proposed protection of information bill will have a devastating effect on academia.
Max Price is joining the Right2Know Campaign’s march to Parliament on Saturday.
The march precedes a debate on the bill in the National Assembly next week.
Price said he was convinced the bill in its current form would muzzle journalists and academics alike.
Price admitted academics were privy to essential classified information at times.
“As an academic and as someone who is concerned about the impact secrecy has on academic freedom, on holding government to account, we need to protest and try to change the bill,” he said.
He urged civil society to make an attempt to join the protest.
Price added he believed the state would be reasonable and listen to the demands of the public.
