World Radio Day – R2K launches #LoveYourCommunityRadio campaign!
Build media freedom from below, by demanding better support and funding for community media organisations, and becoming a community media activist in your own area.
On Wednesday 13 February, World Radio Day, R2K is launching the #LoveYourCommunityMedia campaign, a call to build and strengthen community media. This includes a call for an annual grant to community media organisations to provide quality and independent journalism, and a platform for ordinary citizens to become community media activists at a local level.
Radio is the mass media reaching the widest audience in the world. It is also recognised as a powerful and low-cost communication tool. It is specifically suited to reach remote communities and vulnerable people while offering a platform to have their voices heard in public debates of the day. Media, when placed in the hands of communities, can be the machinery through which democratic participation is achieved.
To commemorate 2019 World Radio Day, Right2Know is launching the #LoveYourCommunityRadio campaign. This includes:
- A call for better public funding through an annual grant, to help community media stations provide a basic quality service, including training and support for journalists. This grant must be made available to all licensed community radio stations subject to their compliance with the licensing conditions!
- A poster and pamphlet championing community media activism, including 9 ways you can build and support community media in your area. (See https://r2k.org.za/communitymedia)
- A mobile petition, through the Awethu platform, for the public to support the call for better funding for their community media stations (See https://r2k.org.za/LOVE)
- And a Love Your Community Radio Training Manual which seeks to inform and educate communities about community media and its role in the development of communities.
