R2K KZN solidarity with Abahlali baseMjondolo
The Right2Know Campaign KZN condemns in the strongest terms the murder of S’fiso Ngcobo, chairperson of Abahlali baseMjondolo eKukhanyeni, by unknown assassins on 22 May. We also decry the shooting of its member Ndumiso Ngcobo, by members of the eThekwini Municipality’s Anti-Land Invasion Unit’s security detail. We believe these violent actions are the ‘traditional weapons’ the authorities and others continue to use to silence and intimidate AbM in its struggle for land and housing rights for the poor. We believe in general, that these tactics of violence are being used to create a climate of fear and intimidation against anyone who ‘speaks out’ for justice in KZN.
In the wake of these attacks and escalating violence in the province, R2K KZN condemns the silence of the justice system during the killings of activists that are tearing the province apart.
KZN seems to have regained its notoriety for being a violent province given these killings and increased tensions with immigrants. We call upon the civil society of this province and beyond to band together and stop the violence in the province and hold those responsible to account for the killing of activists. We have lost a soldier in arms and we have soldier injured we must stand in the gap as civil society and close this gap.
It has become true that under ANC rule the price for people’s rights including land and dignity continues to be paid for in blood as stated by Abahlali basemjondolo.
R2K KZN stands in solidarity with ABM and the families of their slain members in their time of loss. Rest in power qabane.
